The Nature of Witches by Rachel Griffin

2.0

Let me start by saying that I love the magic system in this book, but it fell short in a lot of ways.

The magic system isn't well explained, nor is the history of witches in our current society. She kind of skims over both in one chapter.

Clara is the ULTIMATE pick me girl. That the world won't survive without her. She hurts everyone around her. She can't love anyone or be loved. Her magic is too strong for her to control. There was one part of the book when her mentor, who she's in love with, does a demonstration in front of her class and Clara says in her monolog "I want to scream that I saw this first before everyone else. That it was our secret first".

The romance is also so cringy. Like how the love interest whisper sings into her ear. And when she almost kills him, he says "you're my ever ever ever" when she asks if he remembers who she is. It reminds me of what I thought love was in high school. Very twilight-y.

I hate whiny MC and Clara is one of the worst I've read. I think this could have been so much better if the author just wrote her into her power instead of trying not to use it for 2/3rd of the book because she's afraid to hurt the ones she loves.

I'd say skip this, even with the beautiful cover.
