Valour by John Gwynne

Definitely an improvement over the first, with some real sweet moments. I still struggled to put down the book, even when I wasn't interested in what was going on, which is such a credit to how smoothly Gwynne writes. Whilst it's good this one has more central plot and story drive, I still think it can come across as meandering (there's so much 'we'll have this conversation later' in the book) and with too many POVs. Those POVs are a mixed bag of both personal favourites and a few extremely boring characters, with surprisingly a lot of overlap between the POVs stories that in battles is great but when slowly venturing across the Banished Lands seem pointless.

Love the scope/scale creep of the story too, with more of the prophetic and magical elements of the world seeping in, and the quaint village quarrels becoming quests and fights for survival. The main Corban plot remains the highlight, and not just because of the fact most of the book revolves around him, but also because how strong a group of supporting characters he has in his plot. Genuinely so many heartfelt moments coming from the adventures of him and his little gang.
