Frida Kahlo: The Gisèle Freund Photographs by Gérard de Cortanze, Lorraine Audric, Gisèle Freund

3.0

A collection of photos and stories as curated by Gisele Freund, a German photographer with a love of sociology who fled Nazi Germany to France then to Argentina where she also fled after refusing to limit her creativity by politics, she escaped with the not so flattering negatives of the Perons. She found herself in Mexico and fell in love and spent time with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. This short book tells a little of her story and a part of Frida and Diego's. It is intimate and beautiful, and there is something that asks to be stared at.

If you are interested in getting to know more about the woman behind the myth, than this is a good start. Though maybe with any tale of Frida, I wish there was more of her and less of a focus on Diego, even if his frescos are stunning.
