I’ve been blessed with many enlightening and humbling books this year but I believe Stamped From The Beginning is one of the most influential. There’s no other way to say this but you will see the world differently after reading this book. While I had never truly thought who had invented the idea of Race and why, it was in fact a fabricated concept by some long dead white man. Once you truly understand the way the world has been stacked up against black people there is no return to ignorance, or at least there shouldn’t be.

Kendi does a magnificent job of laying out the timeline based around the lives of people who played a key role in the status of Black people. Those people give us an anchor so the currents of overwhelming information don’t sweep us into the vast ocean of shame. Rather we are given the biography and words of actual humans to mix in, it’s a full plate. Kendi’s writing style is nuanced and upfront abandoning arrogance for cold hard fact.

His novels are clearly well researched as after finishing this novel I did read How To Be Anti-Racist. I believe his works not only stand tall on their own but as a series they are a powerhouse of Black voices telling Black history. These are the books that challenge me to not only better myself as someone of the caucasion persuasion but to uplift oppressed communities by using the names they have assigned to the various crevices of racism and to educate those who’s privilege matches my own. Kendi is the author we desperately needed in 2020.
