The Secret History of Twin Peaks
by Mark Frost
As a huge fan of Mark Frost and Twin Peaks, I was not disappointed by this extensive history of the show's fictional town. I hardly ever indulge in "transmedia"--I prefer shows that stand strongly on their own, this book was given to me as a gift--but The Secret History of Twin Peaks provides revealing context, amusing anecdotes, and an intriguing set-up for what's to come next in the series. Frost extensively and successfully writes the mythology of Twin Peaks using the interpersonal relationships fans will recall from the original series as well as with general American historical events; the history is told through a series of professional documents, personal diaries, photographs, and newspaper articles. Of course, to enjoy or even comprehend this novel, the reader should be familiar with the original first two seasons of Twin Peaks. The Secret History of Twin Peaks perhaps is a well-executed promotional tool for the revival, but that is not a negative caveat--it certainly has succeeded in reigniting my excitement for the series's return.
