This is a book that explores an aspect of World War II often overlooked: the evacuation of English children to the countryside. The main character, Emma, deals with many conflicting emotions regarding her daughter Olivia’s evacuation, as well as persistent grief from her father’s death and the trials of being a single mother. However, the story is actually quite uplifting, and one of found family and the comforts that books bring.
Unfortunately, despite being a book driven by emotion, this did not tug on my heartstrings. The conflicts were repetitive and quickly lost their impact. It made for a rather dull story, although it was heartwarming and compelling at times.
