They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper
by Bruce Robinson
Bruce Robinson is a well-respected director and screenwriter who spent fifteen years researching Jack the Ripper. I was so excited to find this book and read it. All of it. All 803 pages of it. And after all that, I'm not quite convinced of all of his theories.
I do agree that the police investigation was like the Keystone Kops, that there were Masonic elements left as clues and threads throughout all the killings, and attempts at a cover-up by interested parties. I loved his sections on the hypocrisy and hijinks amongst the upper crust in Victorian times. Also, the interplay between the newspapers (on both sides of the pond) and Victorian society and the investigation was fascinating, not to mention sometimes a gold mine of information, even if some of it was "fake" news.
Not for the faint of heart, or for those who don't know Jack about Jack. A gory tome, and sometimes a bit of a slog, but I got a lot out of it.
