The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
3.0
True love transcends through time...
The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my mother's favorite books. I saw the film adaptation a few years ago and I was really touched by the story. So, I decided to read the novel.
The story centers on the timeless romance between Henry DeTamble and Clare Abshire. Henry is librarian who suffers from a genetic disorder called Chrono-Displacement, which allows him to time travel to any point of his life in times of stress or emotional arousal. Clare is a beautiful young artist from a well-to-do family. Their love story begins when Clare is still very young. Henry time travels to see her during her childhood and adolescence knowing that she will eventually become his wife. Clare falls in love with him and hopes for the day that they will be united in holy matrimony. They finally meet at the Newberry Library where Henry works and long story short they fall in love and get married. Clare has to cope with Henry's condition but the two of them are very happy for awhile. But then Clare starts to yearn for a child of her own and Henry's condition makes it difficult for them to have a child. After 6 miscarriages, Henry's vasectomy, and a late night rendezvous with Henry from the past they succeed in conceiving a child. They have a daughter named Alba who is a Chrono-Displaced Prodigy; which means that she can sometimes control the destination of her time travels. Tragedy strikes when Henry's feet are amputated after a frostbite incident, leaving him with no means of escape in his future travels. He gets shot by Clare's brother during a jump back to the past and eventually dies. He knew it was inevitable but he left Clare a letter telling her that he would still visit from time to time and that she shouldn't be sad.
Well, what can I say? The plot is unique and the is romance heart-warming. Unfortunately, I became a bit bored with the narration. There were some parts that I really wanted to skip because it was so dull. But I loved the ending where Clare is an 82-year-old woman and Henry appears in the middle of the night to see her. It just showed how everlasting their love was, and even though Henry was dead he wasn't gone from her life...
