The Raven and the Reindeer
by T. Kingfisher
I never liked The Snow Queen as a kid. I didn't like Hans Christian Andersen in general even though I could see the appeal of dark/sad fairy tales when it came to the brothers Grimm or Oscar Wilde (it always somehow felt as though the Grimms and Wilde wanted to tell a story, whereas Andersen just wanted to make children cry).
Anyway, T. Kingfisher takes a tale I never liked by an author I hated and transforms it to a beautiful thing and that wasn't surprising in the slightest -she could take the bleakest story and transform it to something heartwarming, funny and all-round wonderful.
