Fever
by Joan Swan
If ever I needed a definition of romantic suspense, Fever by Joan Swan would be it! This debut novel had everything that a romantic suspense is – a man who admits to his own shortcomings and is willing to put everything on the line, not only to expose the truth, but to do anything to be with his young daughter; a woman who is tough as nails, determined, who refuses to let anyone get in her way, who is passionate, but deep down someone who wants to love and be loved for the strong woman she is; you have suspense, a mystery the whole way through with a slight twist of the paranormal that does not detract from the focus of the genre at all – in fact, it adds to it.
I was pleasantly surprised to receive Fever in the mail after signing up to get the book for free in exchange for this review, but either way, I would have gladly paid full price for the experience of reading this amazing story. The moment I started, it was a real challenge to put it down! Each time I opened it, it instantly pulled me in and kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen to Teague and Alyssa next!
Joan Swan created characters that are not your stereotypical hero/heroine . . .Teague Creek (what a wonderful name!!) is a man full of faults and mystery and some roughness around the edges, but he is also a man with a soul, a conscious and a heart who is doing the only thing he feels he can do to change the situation he is in. Dr. Alyssa Foster is feisty, strong-willed, not afraid to voice her opinions and although determined to get back to the life she was building for herself, she finds that her passions might not lie in the analytical, but in being passionate with a man she felt she shouldn’t be attracted to at all. Throw in a couple of friends and an overprotective brother and you have the ingredients for a great cast of characters that practically leap off of the page!
The suspense aspect of the book drew me in as much as the characters did. Teague is all about gaining his freedom and at any cost and getting his daughter back. Alyssa is all about finding out the truth of what happened that ended Teague in jail in the first place and led him to the actions that he took. Combined with Alyssa’s brother and Teague’s friend, this small band of intense, passionate people are on the fast track to figuring out what happened and who’s behind it all. Was there some kind of secret experiments going on with firefighters? Were did Teague get his ability that allows him to heal with a touch? And why is a high powered member of the government hell bent on keeping Teague quiet at all costs?
By the end of Fever I was practically holding my breath and had a sense of disappointment . . .that it was over! I found myself wanting more. Wanting to know what happened next. All I can hope is that Joan Swan will have a follow up to this amazing debut novel so that I can fall even more in love with her characters and find out what is going on!
