Night Film by Marisha Pessl
2.0

So incredibly disappointing. While the mysteries surrounding the horror film director and his enigmatic daughter kept me reading, and I loved some of the bits about our relationship with horror and the fine line between reality and fiction, the writing was *awful*. The little mystery-solving team was unlikable and shallowly developed. Pessl obviously took too much to heart criticisms that STICP was filled with too many obscure literary references (actually one of the things I loved about that book) and so we're left with dialogue like this:
"Can you blame him?" I asked. "He is married to IT. I'm referencing the Stephen King book."

Moreover, she has developed this tic of randomly italicizing 3-4 words a paragraph. Such as: "A human shadow had just moved directly behind it, though, as if sensing we'd spotted it, it froze". It was *maddening*, and took about half the book for me to train myself to ignore it. I can't believe her editor let her get away with it.

Ugh.
