The Book That Wouldn't Burn
by Mark Lawrence
This was amazing. I cannot wait for the next two books!
First of all: the setting. Are there any of us here that wouldn't absolutely love to live and work in this library? The visuals alone are absolutely stunning!
Secondly: the characters. Our two main characters have such depth to them. I especially appreciate how practical and matter-of-fact they are even as children - they are by no means emotionless, and they absolutely makes some impulsive decisions, but they are far from stupid. I always appreciate when an author doesn't dumb-down child characters - especially children in such harsh conditions.
The secondary characters are just as vibrant! Even Livra's fellow students that we don't see much of have unique and memorable characters. Even the raven (that may or may not be alive... for a given value of 'alive'...) has stuck in my head!
The plot was also incredible. Twisting and turning and building on itself - always with a sense of forward motion. I thought I knew it was going at least three times. I was wrong. I was _so_ wrong! I never saw the big twist coming until it hit me. And even then I still didn't expect that last page!
Finally: the epigraphs! Every one important world-building or a amusing reference - or both! I have followed Mark Lawrence here on Goodreads for a while and especially enjoyed the Enid Blyton reference!
Just an all-around stunning and delightful book. There are good messages of self-awareness and acceptance and choosing family, but they don't smack you across the face, they are just a part of the story. Absolutely would recommend to anyone.
