Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson
4.0
4.5 stars.
This book is considered one of the best in the series by most readers cuz this is when you start understanding shit in the world lmao (But second book is my absolute favourite until now). You’ll get the references to various places and races without getting confused out of your mind. That is how complex this series actually is- it takes roughly 1500 pages to get used to the world!
This book is a sequel to book one and happens at the same time as book two.
I didn’t rate it 5 stars cuz it could’ve been shorter. Also because I took a long time to finish this. I had to pause it for many months because of its length and that led to me reading the summaries of finished chapters multiple times in the wiki.
“We humans do not understand compassion. In each moment of our lives, we betray it. Aye, we know of its worth, yet in knowing we then attach to it a value, we guard the giving of it, believing it must be earned, T’lan Imass. Compassion is priceless in the truest sense of the world. It must be given freely. In abundance.”
The writing style/narration came a long way from the first book. This is the kind of book that makes you reread the lines cuz they are that beautiful. All the new characters were very fun to read. The character arcs were stunning.
“Of all the weapons we turn upon ourselves, guilt is the sharpest, Silverfox. It can carve one’s own past into unrecognizable shapes, false memories leading to beliefs that sow all kinds of obsessions.”
The plot was amazing. There is so much foreshadowing in this series and it always pays-off.
The ending made me bawl at 2 in the morning.
I’m really excited for book four because I think it merges the events of book two.
I can see that this series is a mind-blowing epic and I’m in for the ride.
