Guards! Guards!: The Play by Terry Pratchett
3.0
This review takes place after reading this book thrice and it's squeal, Men at Arms, twice. As I begin my re-read of Discworld I realize I am going to continue to come up against a significant problem each time I go to rate one of the 41 books. If this book were a stand alone I would absolute give it 4 stars - no hesitation. It is arguably better than most books I've read, I would gladly re-read it, and I would recommend it without hesitation. The problem is that at the same time its sequel is unarguably a better book. We get an idea of what the characters could be in this book, but we get the actual beginnings of that growth in the next volume. The city watch is easily my favorite of the Discworld sub-series, and it does all start here with the delightful, clever, play on fantasy detective series tropes, as well as the character of Sybil: a women who has neither the time nor the patience to be a damsel in distress.
However, at the same time, I know that the people I have come to love really start to shine in the next book.
