I am uncertain if I read this when I was younger, but as an adult, I found it more enjoyable than I had expected just based off my experience with the movie/musical. While that is fun in its own way, it does a disservice to the more developed world and plot found within the original book, which I am grateful to have now read. This had more in-depth characters with complex relationships, and the world development and detail was welcome. The romance level was one where the main character was only vaguely interested and he was not her primary focus over herself. It kept me engaged and interested, and I enjoyed the overall message of finding one's inner strength.
