The Truths We Hold: An American Journey
by Kamala Harris
i first received this book for my birthday in 2020, a few months before vp harris and biden won the election. i read some 60 or so pages of this memoir before i unfortunately shelved it and forgot about it. now, considering kamala harris has and continues to make history, i figured it was finally time to pick this back up and get to know her. this memoir speaks to her character and the moral compass that she’s grown up with and that guides her in her political career. it was enriching to read about her time as a child growing up in oakland, as district attorney of san francisco, attorney general of california, and her time in the senate. a good part of this book reads like a policy platform considering this was published in 2019, around the time of her first presidential bid. it’s so interesting reading this book now because even though at the time of writing this she’s made history, she had no idea that she would become even more indescribably accomplished in the form of becoming madam vice president, being the first woman of color at the top of a major political party’s ticket, and (manifesting) the first female president of the united states. man. what a life. i am so lucky to be living during the same lifetime as her, and to experience her expertise and leadership so young
she wrote in a very digestible and approachable way. politics and political issues can become difficult to understand very quickly, but she writes about the most pertinent issues plaguing our nation in a way that anyone could pick up, read, and walk away with their own thoughts as well as hers. i especially enjoyed reading about her mother. it hit home. we may not agree of every single policy approach, but like i said before, i could not be more fortunate enough than i am now to witness her leadership during this time. harris walz 2024!!!!!!!!!
