Open Water
by Caleb Azumah Nelson
I think this novel is a bit like marmite. I say this because I can understand why someone would fall in love with it, despite my inability to do so. The thing is, the very thing that is beautiful about the book, is the same thing that frustrated me.
Without giving any spoilers, this book explores some really important issues in such an eloquent and poetic way. The writing is a literal work of art, however I felt as though it got in the way of the story. It felt a bit like watching a movie, where the characters hardly spoke. It's as if you never really knew them.. put simply, it lacked depth. Perhaps 2nd person narration is just not for me, I'm not quite sure. I would still recommend this book though, I think it's clear to any reader that Caleb has an ability to convey feelings and emotions in a way that allows you to escape your own mind, and into the picture he has painted... at times it was breath taking, I just wish I could have been invited further in. I am definitely not mad at this debut though and I'm excited to see what else he has in store
