Uncommon Type: Some Stories
by Tom Hanks
I've had this sitting on my to-read stack for over 6 months now and I've finally gotten to read it!
I wasn't sure what to expect from Hanks but this collection of little stories linked by the common presence of a typewriter are extremely readable. Some of the stories are fantastical: a group of friends in a home-made rocket fly around the moon, and a billionaire makes trips back in time to a single day in 1939 - other stories are more mundane: There is a new life for a divorced mum, a teenager discovers his dad having an affair, a whirlwind romance between friends and many more. There are stories that are clearly drawn from Hank's life experience like the one about an on the rise movie star on his first publicity tour.
All the stories have well rounded characters, a great sense of time and place, and emotional depth for all their brevity. Some are very light-hearted while others fall on the darker side but none of them are bleak.
I enjoyed this more than I was expecting, when I began reading I was slightly worried that this would be yet another celebrity who had published a book more for vanity than talent. That worry was needless and I would happily pick another book by Hanks anytime.
