Y'all were not kidding: I love that gargoyle with all my heart. Rory, on the other hand, I could take or leave. He's so unproblematic as to be uninteresting. That said, I look forward to him (and Maude!!) in his vengeance era.
Altogether loved this for its atmosphere and its take on the relationship between religion and profit, though once again I fear the last 15% is by far the best. Some encounters with the Omens were far more compelling than others, some words were egregiously over-used (fractured... ignoble... "taking up the mantle") and I wish we'd gotten more depth to Maude. But god how refreshing to read (via audiobook) a romantic fantasy by an author who can write prose without relying on excess fragments or modern slang.
