Being a Beast
by Charles Foster
I can tell you that Charles Foster roughs it among animals like Farley Mowat does, writes about nature lyrically like Robin Wall Kimmerer does, and even leans toward interkingdom connections like Merlin Sheldrake does, but he's not them, he's Charles Foster, and very different.
This audiobook, read by the author, who has a fine, pleasant voice, was sometimes disgusting in its graphic detail of animal lives, and sometimes ethereal, and frequently immensely amusing. I'm going to have to relisten to catch some of the dry wit I probably missed early on, shaking my head and thinking, "seriously?!" And yet, witty as he can be, he seems also to be serious and honest.
The listen was an enjoyable experience I dipped into occasionally over the course of nearly four months, and an experience that I look forward to repeating.
