Not your typical Allende....the genre is different at least. A lot of time is spent on establishing the characters, too much time in my view - the book drags on for most of the first half. The fact that one of the events described in the synopsis does not occur until well past the two-thirds mark did not help either.
I was also not a fan of the sudden switch to first person narrative in the final part.
The fact that the game the book is named for seems more of an afterthought than the focus of the novel is disappointing.
All in all not a great revelation, but entertaining enough at the end to warrant the three star rating I ended up giving it.
