The Perfect Marriage
by Jeneva Rose
I’ll say the storyline did keep me engaged, but I was kind of let down/confused when, at the end, Sarah did a complete 180. Like why is the majority of the book written as if she was an innocent woman who was cheated on by her husband and then at the end she just goes “oh yeah by the way, I killed her?” It just didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. It lacked the shock factor. And I think the fact that it took 3-4 pages for her to explain how her and Bob did it watered it down.
And can we talk about the plot holes? Like, was Kelly actually abused by her husband? Was Sarah not pregnant with Adam’s baby after it was made a point to say that they tried for a baby and she threw up in the courthouse and “didn’t know why?” I feel like that was sloppy.
Plus, the beginning of the book was kind of annoying to read. I didn’t like the unnecessary descriptiveness. For example:
“Adam pours two cups of coffee and places one beside my black Bottega briefcase. He removes the used coffee filter from the machine and walks to the garbage, pressing his foot on the pedal to open the lid.”
I don’t know, I just don’t like it. Like we know how to open a trash can and it feels fluffed up for no reason if that makes any sense. The writing style did improve later in the book.
Overall, I think the ending could have been way better. I think there were a lot of plot holes and a lot of unanswered questions. I will give it props for being a good quick read, though. I finished it pretty quickly and I’ve been in a reading slump lately. I don’t usually write book reviews but I felt like I needed to for this one.
