The Boy from the Woods by Harlan Coben
3.0

This novel featured fast-paced dialogue, a diverse cast of characters, and a lot of moving pieces. I think my biggest issue about this particular novel is that everything seems a bit too surface-level for me.

For example, characters are supposedly in passionate new romances or strained affairs, but no one seems to actually have any strong feelings for each other at all despite how emotional everything is supposed to be from the outside. Also, moments that are supposed to be suspenseful/frightening are bland and disappointing.

The author worked hard at leading up to these moments of intense conflict and rescue, but when the events actually happened everything was generally solved with banter and a threat. I just ended up feeling teased.

The dialogue pacing was fast and the overall story read well. While reading, I enjoyed it and wanted to keep going to find out what was happening, but the second I set it down I found myself unable to bring up any excitement about it.
