Abaddon's Gate by James S.A. Corey

This one was a bit . . . well, stinky is probably too strong. But definitely comes in third place.

Plotwise, it feels like two books that have been duct-taped together. There is all the sturm und drang getting Holden (who is NOT going through the ring—okay, I guess I'm going through the ring) on to the station, then off the station, and then . . . oh yeah, we have to do a whole mutiny. The minimization of the non-Holden Roci crew is always going to irritate me (there is hardly any Amos at all, and I call SHENANIGANS), and the story just felt rather jerky.

But there are also some big-time narrator problems here: Although Bull eventually ends up being engaging, to me, it read as if the authors changed their mind about his characterization part-way through. He seems like kind of an idiot early on, then he's suddenly pulling off this complex diplomatic scheme (mostly). Anna's sections are good, and I actually enjoyed book Tilly quite a bit more than series Tilly. But oy vey. There are just no words for how I do not care about Melba/Clarissa and her solid-gold-toilet trauma.

In the series, she was something of a tough sell (although retrospectively, I credit both the writing and the actor for coming closer to pulling off this story line), but here, there is definitely no sale. She drifts from one dumb plan that assumes her world-without-end significance to the next and they 100% should have spaced her.
