Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett
3.0
I received this as an eARC through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Josie's family is a hot mess. She is the result of a brief encounter between her mother and father. He split before she was born and periodically checks in throughout her life. Her mother is flighty and moves them constantly throughout the east coast. Josie spent many of her formative years living with her grandmother above their family owned bookshop in the town of Beauty. There she had a best friend named, Lucky. One night, Josie's mother and grandmother had a knock down drag out fight that ended with the police being called. Josie and her mother fled in the night and haven't been back since. As a result, Josie lost touch with Lucky. When Josie's grandmother and aunt go to Nepal for the year, she and her mother come back to Beauty to help her cousin mind the bookshop. On their first day back, Josie sees Lucky and sees that he has turned into a hot and broody dude. Josie is desperate to work on her photography and join her father once she graduates. When a vandalism attempt goes awry, Josie and Lucky are brought together and forced to take a look at their past.
Bennett so great at crafting characters and making her settings one of the characters. Beauty had its own feelings, history, and even a hell mouth (allegedly). This was a solid romance book with depth. The discussion of communication with family and truth were emotional and realistic.
