oooh I enjoyed this.
I love books about the complexity of being loved and loving, the pitfalls of desire, and despite the occasional cliches in the narrative (older sadsack writer chasing after younger beautiful but deranged homme fatale ect ect ect) this really dove into these entanglements along with all the tension of being in a toxic, obsessive and masochistic relationship. Towards the end of the relationship the emotional tightline they were walking was just constantly activating my fight or flight so it ended up being a pretty quick read.
The characters are complex and well-defined and it's also an evasive but sharp insight into the emotional and physical toll of the early days of the AIDS crisis, which is rarely centre stage but always essential.
