I have SO MANY mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I had a fantastic time reading it, and I will probably read the rest of whatever ends up being published in this series (at the date of this review there are no other books in the series yet). On the other hand, the quality of this book is, at best, EXTREMELY questionable.

The characters in this book absolutely shine! They are dynamic and interesting. Every single character, down to the smallest side character, has clear motivations for their actions. It takes a while to understand all of the characters, but every last one is multifaceted and rich with personality. That said, the vibrancy of the characters doesn’t always correlate with their actions. Several times in the book characters contradict themselves with their actions, in a way that usually seems to be a result of poor plot planning.

The world-building is likewise incredible! There is a very rich, fun, and vibrant history explored in the book. Genuinely, the world-building was my favorite part of this book. That said, the world-building is absolutely riddled with inconsistencies that lead to a multitude of plot holes. All of these plot holes are incredibly minor and don’t detract much from the overall story, but they definitely exist.
