Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther
by Roland H. Bainton
Bainton's volume is a worthwhile introduction to Luther, braiding European history and Lutheran theology throughout. The narrative pace drags immediately before and after Worms, and the intrigue of the events is sometimes lost in Bainton's tepid explorations of Luther's psyche and motivations. The early and late life sections are remarkably written, as are the descriptions of the church of the Middle Ages.
