Smoketown: The Untold Story of the Other Great Black Renaissance by Mark Whitaker

5.0

Fascinating, well researched story of one of the less talked about destinations of the Great Migration. Despite their relatively small numbers the African American inhabitants of Pittsburgh, PA have had major impacts to all segments of American society. But this is also the story of tremendous loss at the hands of a majority culture who couldn’t see past their own needs for fortune and glory to value the gem in their midst. I highly recommend this for lovers of American history and those connoisseurs of the Harlem Renaissance.
