She and Her Cat by Makoto Shinkai, Naruki Nagakawa
4.0

Book #7 of 2023.

What a delightful read!!

It did not pass my mind when picking this book up that it’s spun from the concept by the creator of anime such as Your Name and Weathering With You! Honestly this was a case of judging the book by its cover and being distracted by a cute cat on the cover…

She and Her Cat is a delight of a slice-of-life novel. Short and sweet and split up into smaller inter-connected parts, it’s a book that captured what is imagined to be the goings on in a cat’s head and the loneliness of people soon enhanced by the addition of pure love from their adopted pets.

There are no grand set-pieces, drama, arguments, gunfights, etc. Sometimes just like in the world of anime/manga, a cute chill slice-of-life than thrive in a book such as this.

Do I wish for more illustrations? Yes. Do I wish for more stories from this world? Potentially. But this short work fleshes out a neighbourhood and time and season simple yet effective.

Definitely something to curl up and read with a nice warm drink. There’s just something so comfortable of the unconditional care and love these cats have for their owners, the curiousity of the outside world, and how even the most isolated can still not be the most alone.
