This is basically the wizard of Oz. But in this case, the Wizard has lost his memory and collects a rag-tag group or jugglers (!) to help him reclaim the seat of power.
Oh, and it takes place on a science fiction world backwater, which means it’s more of a fantasy setting with “tech” filling the void for magic. But apparently there’s also “magic” too, but that might just be psionics + theatrics.
Anyhow, the story is straight up Bildungsroman with a lot of world-building travelogue. It’s really good, but pretty predictable.
There are two more books in the series. I might give them a try, but not right away.
