A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

5.0

Some people say A Little Life is trauma porn, but I don't agree with that. Saying something is "trauma porn" implies that the work profits from its trauma, and the suffering don't receive any justice or reprieve. Throughout the book, Jude hurts so immensely that the story is difficult to get through, but he also finds unconditional love through his dearest friends, a partner, and a family. Not only does he find love, but his loves (particularly his partner) come to realize that they can't "fix" him and see him as he is, a beautifully talented man in tremendous pain. Finding love in its honest and truest form is perhaps the most incredible form of justice Jude can receive, or that any of us can receive.
