The Good Terrorist
by Doris Lessing
Amazing. I got really into it. Alice is a great character, good at picking up body language but also great at ignoring inconvenient truths. I became really invested both in her attempts to fix up the squat and also their plotting to 'help' the IRA. Which is really weird because I'm a peace-loving slob. Like, I barely look after myself, I'm not going to steal curtains or get involved with roofing tiles unless I something is about to cave in.
The climactic car bomb scene (and the shaky comedown) actually gave me a bit of an adrenaline spike. Though I can't help but wonder if that's because I read the relevant passages just hours after a similar car ramming attack in Toronto.
I hate to say it because they're all terrible people but I actually had fun hanging out with the squatmates and comrades, which makes me feel pathetic because that definitely wasn't the point of the book.
