3.5 stars. It’s unfortunate that access to assisted suicide is so challenging in the U.S. Working with people who have various stages of dementia, I see first-hand how heartbreaking this disease is for the family and caregivers.

What sort of bothered me about this book was the author’s frequent mention of how the couple was not wealthy, but the stories of her and Brian’s (lavish) life and professional careers indicate otherwise (shopping, hotels, parties, travel, gourmet food). Her lifestyle is not representative of the average American. Amy clearly has privilege and access that comes with it. This fact makes it even sadder bc it’s another example of the opportunities afforded to those of privilege that are not even an option for the average person. This does does diminish the fact that Amy’s experience was he hardest kind of hard. My heart goes out to anyone and everyone whose loved ones have this horrible diagnosis. I hope we see a day where healthcare opportunities are not dictated by wealth, race and gender.
