The Promise
by Damon Galgut
I actually liked the constant switching between first-, second-, and third-person. Maybe because I'm used to it with other authors, so it didn't feel confusing.
Also appreciate the overall message and the story's direct parallel to the apartheid. Interesting thatAmor doesn't actually go into the house until the very end. She is sympathetic, but chooses to shelter herself from some of the truths and runs away instead, only choosing when it's easiest to be the 'white saviour'.
Main critique is: I'm bugged that Salome is barely mentioned. Why??? She's easily the best character but is in the background of her own story.
