Moon and the Mars by Kia Corthron

5.0

An insightful and very human work of historical fiction. The characters were engaging and, all in all, believable people trying to do their best. Sometimes the character’s thoughts/behaviors and interactions seemed a bit on the nose or contrived, but altogether a thoughtful and compassionate journey through a compelling time/place with sympathetic characters. The narrative voice of Theo was also very enjoyable and fun to read- the author clearly took a lot of care with writing both historical languages/dialects and the mind of a young person. I also learned a lot about the time and setting. This book reminded me why I love historical fiction.
