k8vero 's review for:
Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen
by Garth Nix
Like some of the other reviewers, I thought this book had amazing potential but was ultimately so frustrated with Clariel who seemed to have essentially zero redeeming traits.
Rather than legitimately seeming like Free Magic was a reasonable temptation, it actually seemed like Clariel was A) stupid for not paying any attention whatsoever to the sketchy sketchy characters leading her down that path and B) motivated by laziness because Charter magic was just soooooo boring to her and Free Magic was...fun? Or at least easy.
Her only personality trait seemed to be: I LOVE THE FOREST AND NOTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD. Having an asexual protagonist could be really great and interesting, but I actually think this was a clumsy (and possibly insulting/harmful) portrayal because Clariel didn't seem capable of connecting with ANYONE even on a friendship level.
