dark emotional informative reflective medium-paced

ironic that I had a review half-typed out and then it got deleted and now I'm starting over. chaos always wins.

took a couple of chapters for me to get into the book, but I'm glad I stuck with it. does a good job of articulating the oxymoron that is the human experience of attempting to find meaning and order in this world. lots of interactions between linguistics and biology and art in this book. I cried reading about Anna and Mary; partially because I was sad and angry they had to go through what they did but mostly because of how touched I was by their love.

standout quotes:
pg 180
we have been wrong before and we will be wrong again.

pg 194
behind every ruler there is a Ruler.

appreciated the note at the end of the book letting us readers know about this https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2020/10/jordan-agassiz
