This Foreign Affair by Harper Bliss

4.0

I'm surprised that I liked this so much; it's almost 'love at first sight' which takes a lot for an author to make work, and even more to make it work for ME. And I honestly didn't find that aspect very appealing, how quickly they fell in love. But the whole whirlwind romance and developing feelings for this person that you seem to meet at exactly the right moment in your life... that, I did really like. Camille was extremely charming, perhaps my favourite protagonist for far in the Pink Bean Series. I loved all her jokes and teasing and her joy at being a new granny. That's also something to love about a Harper Bliss book; characters falling in love in their middle years, getting a new lease on life. I also liked how the whole issue of Zoya being a victim of infidelity was handled. At first I kind of hated Rebecca, but the story was good about showing (and having Zoya slowly realise) that she was just a woman who fell in love outside of her relationship, and while she went about it in the wrong way, she's not a bad person.

Also liked the crossover with the French Kissing series, which I've been meaning to return to. Angela Dawe does a tooootally different voice for Steph than what Abby Crayden does, and that took some adjusting to. But it was fun. I feel like the writing always gets a bit stilted and formulaic when the author starts to talk about politics, but thankfully that didn't happen much.

A nice, relaxing, affirming read. 3.5 stars.
