I was so close to giving this five stars. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, technically speaking it probably deserves five stars. The creation of the main character as someone sympathetic but oh so flawed is magnificently done. The small details that, put together, create such a vivid picture of this marriage that almost happened. I don’t know whether it’s because they’re both Irish but the characterisation and writing style was very Sally Rooney-esque. I don’t think it’ll stick with me the way that other five star books do which is the only reason it’s not getting five stars. But it was so close.
