Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Cath is one of the most boring characters to read about I've ever met. Is she relatable? Yes, intensely so. Does that mean I want to read about a hermit with mommy issues and a manic dad? Nope.

Also, while this book is very character-driven, Cath is the only developed character. I'm not sure how Rowell got away with that, because besides having ONE character and a bunch of half-formed ghosts floating around in Cath's background, she also has no plot. Did anyone else notice that about this "amazing" and weirdly popular book? THERE IS NO RISE AND FALL. THERE IS NO STORY ARC. THERE IS NO PLOT. NOTHING EFFING HAPPENS! Rowell threw this girl into a new situation where nothing happens and watches her walk through daily life. Wow.

Also, the fan fiction was... odd. I kinda get fanfic to an extent, but being so submersed that you no longer have a solid grip on reality seems like more than a character flaw.. It kinda seems like she might take after her daddy more than she might like but no body is willing to be honest with her about how off that is? Idk. If I loved somebody like that I think I'd be pretty vocal about them talking to a therapist. They're hiding for a reason.

I truly don't understand the mass hysteria adoration of this book, and I'm frustrated that I succumbed to the great reviews.
