La compañía by Verónica Gerber Bicecci

An incredible blend of photography, experimental fiction, modernist adaptation, scholarly research, and political screed. But more than any of that, this is the traumatic story of those people and places destroyed by the forces of extractive capital (in this case, mercury). It traces one small community’s ever-fraying hold on land, health, and property as an illustration of much larger processes.

The best thing I’ve read so far in 2020.
