The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
by Suzanne Collins
I'm so conflicted by this book. On one hand, I loved being back in the world of Panem. It was so intriguing to learn about the history of the Hunger Games and how some of the traditions had started that by the 74th games seem to just be a normal thing. I loved Lucy Gray. She was such a badass and a character I really fell in love with.
On the other hand, the plot really meandered once the games were over. Part 3 was, for the most part, completely unnecessary. I feel like this book could have been at least 100-150 pages shorter than it was. The plot went off in so many different directions, and knowing Snow's characteristics from the Hunger Games, I still feel like it was a little bit implausible that we get from the end of TBOSAS to the beginning of the Hunger Games.
Overall, the first part of the book was amazing. I was so confused by people saying that they didn't like it, because at the point I was at, I was so engrossed in the story and the world. But by the end, I was bored and unimpressed, just waiting for the book to be over. The end does pick up, but by that point, I was so done with the book, that I couldn't be bothered to care.
