Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

I resisted reading this for a long time. Coming off the disappointment that was the Twilight Saga, another vampire romance (complete with mind-reading) made me cringe. But I finally caved. And, yes, I cringed, but I had more fun doing it this time.

I did get into this story, though I found myself laughing *at* it quite frequently (and at some of the places I wasn't supposed to...) I really enjoyed the setting. The rural Louisiana setting read authentic to me in the attitudes, names, dialect, and the entire atmosphere of Bon Temps. It cracked me up especially to see "trashy" vampires (dressed in spandex no less!) It was admittedly fun to read vampires that weren’t all Lestat Old World.

Sookie was a little too Mary Sue in that every male in Bon Temps wanted to bed her. That just got old. But she was independent and resourceful enough I suppose (unlike other vampire story heroines...) I could have done with less of the sex in the story, too. Some of it related to the plot, especially their first time and the time she drank his blood, but the rest just…wasn’t good for me.
