Oathbringer is Brandon Sanderson's 3rd entry into the Stormlight Archive series, and a lot of people favourites from what I've seen.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great book (hence the 4 stars) but the mystery of the world is becoming almost too slow with it's reveal.
I don't want to seem too negative but we're 3 books into a 5 book series (Yes I know there will be 5 more on top but this series of character ends in 2 more books) and me and my book reading buddy are STILL confused about the unmade, the Radiants and their groups of powers, the Heralds (both their names and relation to Radiants etc).
I get some people enjoy this way of storytelling but some of these reveals the characters know and the book treats it like I do too. Which I don't, because it's often given to you in such minor snippets thousands of pages ago that by the time something new is linked to it you can barely remember the original reveal.
If I didn't know better I'd assume I hate mysterious world building where it takes multiple books to reveal them, BUT I DON'T! One of my favourite series is Relm of the Elderlings which takes 16 books to fully flesh out the world our characters live in. Even then, not everything is fully explained or explored. The mystery is innately tied to how much the characters know and as information is revealed to them, it's also revealed to us as readers. Sanderson hasn't quite mastered this art and I feel like I'm going crazy as all I see is people praising his world building ๐ฑ.
In other news, I loved the development we get from all the main cast and crew. Still mad we don't get Renrarin OR Jasnah chapters. How dare we get literally everyone else in the family's PoV but arguably the two most interesting ones๐ค! Though we do get a few lines with Jasnah and Renrarin near the end, the build up of both characters is lost because we haven't seen them in over 1000 pages.
I don't know why I'm rating this 4 stars after ranting this much. ๐
I did enjoy it, I swear!
