The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
5.0
[It’s been a hot second since I read this so it’s not as fresh]
I think bout this book ALL THE TIME now! I found every character so interesting and YES they’re mostly “unlikable” people BUT that’s the point. It’s about examining yourself and others for flaws in empathy. It’s about realizing the limits of wealth. Daisy and Tom aren’t great people and we’re supposed to use that to look at ourselves and others to see how similar we are to them and how we can change to be better.
The themes about wealth, loneliness, and the American Dream are all so well fleshed out and just struck a cord with me. Fitzgerald’s writing is so rich [haha pun about currency] and it really fleshes out the 1920’s scene. I haven’t even talked about Nick and Gatsby.
Ohhhhh Gatsby! Such an INTERESTING character!! He’s lonely and he has a complex relationship with the PAST. He needs Daisy to have never have loved Tom and it’s just a look into how we can’t change the past. His party’s where he doesn’t drink or indulge in the pleasure that he is providing for so many people is all so intriguing. I just ahhhh this book is so thought provoking.
