Old Yeller by Fred Gipson

Just great. Simply but effectively draws us into the world of a young man in frontier days. As I've been thinking more about my cattle-farmer grandparents on both sides of my family, this helped me connect with that life, with a lot of great details about living on the land. Mentions of Native Americans were cringe-y, if I remember right. (I read this a bit at a time over a few months.) Spoiler here, I guess, but I was really surprised by how he handled the dramatic event at the end. Just one sentence. Really impressive, actually. Anyway, glad I read this.
