Coraline by Neil Gaiman

adventurous dark mysterious tense fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? No

4.5

I decided to read Coraline for 3 reasons:
1. I really like the movie
2. It is written AND narrated by Neil Gaiman (yes, listened to the audiobook and it was amazing! more about that later)
3. The audiobook was only 4 hours long so it's an extremely short book and because of all the stress in my life atm I really can't commit to anything longer.

I enjoyed this book so much! Tbh I have no idea how much I would have liked it if I hasn't read it in audiobook format. I still would have enjoyed it probably but I think this is the first time ever the audiobook made my reading experience so much better.

Having the author narrate the audiobook was really cool because that way you know how they themselves read it / hear it. So you know the exact pronunciation, the melody of the songs and the pauses in between sentences etc.

It is quite similar to the movie, but there is a lot added. I liked Coralines parents more in the book than I did in the movie. Also the book was quite spooky. I definitely would not read this to a kid. It was the exact amount of spooky I really like and that isn't too much for me but if I had read this as a kid I would definitely not have enjoyed it. (Or maybe enjoyed it while being extremely freaked out)

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is not a kid though. Especially if you like the movie, go listen to the audiobook! It's so short and totally worth it!
I usually read my books in 2x or 2.5x speed but this one I actually had in normal 1x speed so that I think is one of the highest compliments I can give to an audiobook.
