Still tons of fun on a re-read! Not quite as strong on the sentence level as I remembered, but the worldbuilding is still engrossing, the action scenes are great, the pacing rips, and the characters are all complex and captivating. Love it.

Original review:
This novel is so good it hurts.

Great characters. Fantastic worldbuilding that draws from Islamic mythology in Middle Eastern settings. A world that feels rich and full and lived-in. Gorgeous prose, a compelling drama, and a propulsive plot.

This is easily the best-written and most exciting fantasy novel I’ve read since N.K. Jemisin’s The Killing Moon, and is a superb debut from an exciting new talent. If you’re a fan of brilliantly written, exciting fantasy that doesn’t draw from the imagery of Medieval Europe, then this book is for you!
