City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

5.0

I'll begin with how I haven't read the author's celebrated 'Eat Pray and Love' novel and I went in with an open mind. With zero expectations and the worry of having to read a huge book. They scare me, you see.
.
Well, one word for this baby here - Amazing! Elizabeth Gilbert breathes life into this coming of age/historical fiction with the backdrop of New York City. I've never visited the city or not sure when I will, but she carves quite a vivid picture of the city starting from the 40s and forward. Oh, my. The book is all sorts of win for me with Vivian, a damsel in distress as the protagonist. Well, a lot happens when her life changes for the better or not is for you to read.
.
Synopsis: She arrives from her small town after having dropped out of a prestigious college and was shipped to New York by her parents. She joins her aunt Peg at her theatre and how her life evolves is what you read. It's so scandalous and is so much fun at the time. The book treads through Vivian narrating the story and god, there are times that I had to remind this is from the 40s. The character is flawed and oh-so-human. It's relatable to another level. Not to forget all the other characters that are so rich and not one of them is for you to just to call them as 'boring'.

I'll simply be grateful for this kick-ass book from the writer and take all my stars if you want! PS: the book slightly reminded me of Daisy Jones & The Six. Such wonderful books by women writers in 2019. All hail to these powerhouses of writing!
